The human immune system is an impressive defence mechanism, capable of carrying out immune surveillance to eliminate damaged or abnormal cells, recognizing and destroying infectious organisms. The first line of defence occurs in the body’s tissues. Patrolling macrophages (large scavenger cells) engulf foreign invaders and call upon powerful T-cells to join the fight.
